FAQ
Quick answers to the most frequently asked questions about SaveThat. We do not host any content and usage must comply with copyright and source platform terms.
What is SaveThat?
SaveThat allows you to import a public URL (third-party platform) to extract audio/video and download a local file (e.g. MP3). The service does not host or index any works.
Is it legal to use SaveThat?
Yes, you must comply with the law and the terms of use of the original site. Downloading protected content without authorization may be illegal. The user is solely responsible.
Do you accept copyrighted works?
No. Use SaveThat only for royalty-free content, under Creative Commons license or for which you have the necessary rights.
Does SaveThat store files or copies?
No. Files are generated on the client/processing server side and then saved on your device. We do not keep copies of downloaded works.
Which platforms are compatible?
SaveThat supports several platforms: YouTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Vimeo, Dailymotion and X (Twitter). You can paste a link from any of these sources into the form, or select the platform directly from the carousel at the top of the page. More platforms will be added progressively as development continues.
What formats and output quality (bitrate)?
SaveThat offers two formats: MP3 for audio and MP4 for video. In MP3, quality goes up to 320 kbit/s depending on what the source streams (for example 320 kbit/s on YouTube, 160 kbit/s on SoundCloud, 128 kbit/s on Bandcamp): we reproduce the actual stream quality, without artificially inflating it. In MP4, you choose the quality (360p, 480p or 720p) and the encoding mode (maximum compatibility in H.264, or lightweight in VP9/AV1), within the limits of what the source video offers.
Why is the MP3 thumbnail not displaying?
This file contains multiple embedded thumbnails. To choose a specific one, you need to use appropriate software which will allow you to select and set your preferred thumbnail.
My MP4 file has no video in VLC (AV1 codec error)
Some YouTube videos are encoded in AV1, a modern codec not supported by older versions of VLC (before 3.0.12). Update VLC to the latest version, or re-download the video in 360p or 480p, which typically uses the H.264 codec compatible with all VLC versions.
My MP4 is too large - can I choose a lighter file?
By default SaveThat prioritises the H.264 codec (max compat), compatible with virtually all devices and players. If you prefer a smaller file, enable Light file mode (VP9/AV1) in the format selector : the size can be reduced by 30 to 50 %, but some older players or smart TVs might not play the video.
Where are my files saved?
By default, in your downloads folder via the browser. If you use a local tool, the path can be configurable (e.g. a dedicated Music folder).
How does cancellation work if the bar remains stuck?
Cancellation takes effect at the next step of processing. If "Cancellation in progress" is displayed, let the process stop, then click "Retry".
Why do I get an error message about my link?
First check that your link comes from a supported platform (YouTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Vimeo, Dailymotion or X). The link must be complete and start with https://. Some content is not accessible even from a compatible platform: private videos, deleted videos, age-restricted content, or subscriber-only content. In that case, a specific error message will tell you the cause.
The download is slow or fails
Common causes: unstable network, saturated source, tab in sleep mode, too strict blocker. Try another browser, keep the tab active and temporarily disable blocking extensions.
Can I extract only the audio from a video?
Yes, if the source allows it, we can extract the audio track and offer an MP3.
Are there any duration, size or volume limits?
The site's policy is in favor of an unlimited service, both in terms of number of files and file sizes, however for the stability of the service, technical quotas (duration, weight, number of downloads per period) may apply.
How are privacy and data managed (GDPR)?
We collect the minimum necessary (temporary technical logs, aggregated metrics). Consult the Privacy Policy for the data processed, durations, legal basis and your rights.
Do you use cookies and advertising?
Strictly necessary cookies are always active. Audience measurement (Google Analytics) and advertising (Adsterra) are only enabled after your consent, which you can change at any time via the "Manage my cookies" link at the bottom of the page.
The "Redownload" button does not work
The link may expire, the file may have been moved/deleted, or the browser may block it. Download again and save it locally.
"Music downloaded" counters (site vs session)
Site total: local counter in your browser, reset if you clear your browser cache.
Session: local counter in your browser, reset when the tab/session is closed.
Advertisements and donations
SaveThat is free: advertisements help fund the infrastructure.
